Hello everyone!
As you know, LGSA is committed to serving our immediate Latino communities, including empowering our fellow Latinos/as in any way that we can! With that said, we were very excited when the coordinator of the Hispanic Mother Daughter Program (HMDP) at ASU contacted LGSA to hold a graduate school panel for their college aged participants. For those who are not familiar with the Hispanic Mother Daughter Program, this is an excellent program that mentors Hispanic girls and their mothers as to how to navigate the educational pipeline, and guiding them about the college application process and offering mentorship all the way until college graduation. The girls and their mothers begin their journey with the program during their 8th grade year and attend workshops and meet with their mentors throughout the school years. Mentorship continues even while the girls are attending college (some end up attending ASU). This is an excellent program because the program includes the family component, that is, the mother's influence on Hispanic girls' education, it builds a sense of community within a huge institution like ASU, not to mention the many benefits, including a high retention and graduation rate among its participants. So during this panel, Erika, Karla, and Elizabeth from LGSA spoke to the girls about things like: how to study for the GRE and/or GMAT, the graduate school application process in general, statements of purpose, letters of recommendation, and an example of a very stellar curriculum vitae (courtesy of Karla!) I would like to extend my gratitude to Erika and Karla for helping out with this event, and for bringing awesome treats for the group! We make an excellent team :) I would also like to especially thank Jo Ann Martinez, the director of HMDP and to Jannette Tablas, the coordinator of undergraduate HMDP workshops. We hope to collaborate again real soon on future workshops throughout the year! Sincerely, Elizabeth LGSA Secretary Hola! Here are a couple of updates on what LGSA has been up to so far! Grad Welcome Night The Grad Welcome Night was a great success! Thank you for those who volunteered to put together the display board that we used at our table. We met some great people and had more people sign up to join our listserv and to get involved in the group for the future. We cannot wait to get to know those of you who stopped by our table! First LGSA Dinner and Social of Fall 2012 The dinner and social was a great success, thanks for all of you who came! We had so much fun enjoying yummy food at Garcia's restaurant (next time we will find another place with more 'lively' music :)), and showing off some of our bowling talent afterwards at the AMF Lanes in Tempe! Photos will be posted soon. More social events will be TBA during the course of the semester so stay tuned! Latest meeting on Friday, August 24th We had an awesome, productive meeting this past Friday. Meeting minutes have been posted up for those who were not able to make it so check it out! Please refer to this page to mark your calendars of our future meeting dates for the semester! August 31st Stadium Clean up fundraiser LGSA is planning to help out with the ASU football stadium clean up on Friday, August 31st at 7:00 AM. Clean up should not take any more than 2 hours, so please come out and support us because we need a couple more people! We would have the potential to raise funds up to $600.00 that would go toward important future events to keep our org active. Hope to see you there! Lastly, please post any interesting news and upcoming Latino or community-related events (e.g., Dream Act or Save Ethnic Studies events) in the comments section below! Questions? Comments or suggestions? Please fill out our contact form or email us at [email protected]. Hasta luego amigos! LGSA Saludos amigos y fellow LGSA'ers! We are excited to report that LGSA is planning some amazing things this semester and upcoming year! During the summer, members have met twice and got a lot of voting and decisions completed. Please see our meeting minutes attached to the sidebar for more details. As mentioned on the home page, please see our cool looking flyers for more information on our social night, and future meetings. Also, we now have a google calendar for anyone to access on the site so that you can mark your dates on your agendas, since we are grad students and have to be very organized, right??! Of course! So with that said, please invite any fellow grad students who would be interested in joining our growing crew and we will see all of you real soon! Gracias y paz, Latin@ Graduate Student Alliance Saludos!
We hope that you are having an awesome summer, and most of all, staying cool! We are excited to prepare for the new academic year by having our first meeting in the summer. One of our main goals in the near future is to get some exposure for the organization by participating in the Graduate Student's Welcome Week. Aside from just exposure, we plan on introducing ourselves to new incoming students and to recruit as many members as we can. We have some great plans underway, including social events, mentorship, community service, and outreach opportunities! Not to mention that we have an awesome and motivated team for us to execute these goals! During the summer, there are some great upcoming Latino events and functions outside of LGSA that our members can also get involved with. Some previous examples of events that have been shared with members are events such as: Latino cultural fairs in the Phoenix area, Save Ethnic Studies events, SB 1070 discussion forums, etc. If you would like to share some of these events with the group, please feel free to share it on this blog! Just simply write a comment underneath this blog and let us know! Any new events are welcomed!! We will keep you in the loop about the upcoming Welcome Week, and we look forward to see all of you this upcoming year!! Gracias, LGSA |
