The First Meeting of the Semester is on September 12th: 4:30-5:30pm in the Memorial Union Rm 208.9/7/2013
To kick off the semester some of our officers held an informational table at the Graduate Student Welcome on the Tempe Campus to recruit new members and spread the word about our organization! Then, we all met up for our first Social of the year - Happy Hour at Canteen followed by game night nearby!
Hi everyone! There are so many great things happening around here! First off, we want to congratulate DREAMzone for being this year's winner of the Clinton Global Initiative! Our very own Jesus Cisneros is DREAMzone's founder and co-coordinator, so we are very proud of the things he and Davier Rodriguez are doing for this program! Davier was able to travel to St. Louis and meet President Clinton and Stephen Colbert, which was very exciting to see! Next, LGSA hosted a DREAMzone presentation during Graduate Student Appreciation Week, which educated the grad student community about the preliminary findings about the effectiveness of the DREAMzone program. This is Jesus Cisneros presenting what they've found so far! Finally, LGSA had a table set up during the GPSA grad week picnic. We enjoyed lots of free pizza and dessert and met some great people! Thanks everyone who stopped by! LGSA's next social event will take place next weekend on Saturday, April 27th at 11 AM at the Tempe Beach Park, where we will be attending the annual Salsa Challenge! Please come and hang out with us! Hasta Luego, LGSA Here at LGSA we know how to have some fun to destress from our grad student responsibilities! Above is a group photo from one of our many social events in March! Come check us out at during grad student appreciation week (see flyer and calendar below)!! We look forward to seeing you there! LGSA is proud to announce that we will have some very awesome things planned for Grad Student Appreciation Week! LGSA will be holding a DREAMzone event tomorrow, where we will be discussing research regarding interesting findings about the effectiveness of the DREAMzone program. You don’t want to miss out on this talk! DREAMzone has recently been selected by the Clinton Global Initiative as a top 8 solution! This is a great honor that is not only shedding light on the wonderful things taking place at ASU, but is also putting undocumented students at the forefront! Please vote and encourage others to vote over the next few days so we can continue to advance! www.cgiu.org/bracket We will also have a table out during the picnic on Friday. Come visit our table and say hi! We hope to see you there! LGSA Hi everyone! The social planning committee for the month of March is planning to hold a picnic/potluck this Saturday so please come on by! We will have some of Rob's amazing horchata and some yummy food dishes to eat! Please RSVP ASAP and let us know what you plan to bring :) Hope to see you there!! Saturday, March 9th @ 12 PM: LGSA Papago Park Potluck Picnic! Location: Papago Park by the hole in the rock Address: 625 N. Galvin Parkway Phoenix, 85008. Once you get to this location, you have to go a little further to get to the parking lot where the picnic will be held (see pictured maps below). Time: 12:00 PM This Saturday at noon we will pick a pleasant pasture at Papago Park by which to perch and placate our peckish palates by partaking in a profusion of pleasurable provisions provided by the plethora of pleasant, pretty people populating our particular group at this month's Potluck Picnic. Come socialize, relax, and eat with LGSA members. This is a potluck, so it would be great if everyone who is coming could let us know what they are bringing so that we have a wide variety of food and drinks. Please email Elizabeth at [email protected] on what you plan to bring. Some suggested things/ideas to bring are: • meat dish 1 (something with chicken) • meat dish 2 (something with pork) • veggie. dish 1 • rice and refried beans • potato salad • drinks (soda, water, cups) Sindy will already provide the napkins and plates. Feel free to let Rob, Sindy, or Elizabeth know if you are having trouble finding the place. Thanks and see you soon! Not too much, just having an awesome time with our amazing LGSA friends, whether it is dancing the night away to Salsa, Bachata and Cumbia under the stars, collaborating with DREAMzone, or mentoring our fellow Latino/a youth to serve the community! We have a lot going on this semester but there is so much more to look forward to, so stay posted! Here are some pictures from the past events that we have held so far during the months of January and February: Many thanks to los tocayos (Jesus C. and Jesus G.) for planning this super fun event! Wednesday nights are now officially our go to place for free Latin dancing lessons and dancing at Dave and Buster's in the Tempe Marketplace! We will send out emails the next time we are planning to go! :D LGSA is also proud to announce that we have hosted our very first DREAMzone training. For those of you who are not aware, DREAMzone training is a 4-hour ally certification training designed for students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members in order to establish a visible support for undocumented students at ASU. We were very happy to partake in this training, as we are in support for undocumented students to succeed in every way! Finally, many thanks to our amazing ladies at LGSA to offer mentorship and advice to our fellow Latino/a students, both within the community and students at ASU. LGSA collaborated with both the Hispanic Mother Daughter Program at ASU and with the Hispanic Congressional Caucus Institute to come and speak with students about what college and graduate school life is like. It is events like these that we hope we can make a difference to at least one student. We are very excited to announce that Dr. Alan Gómez will join LGSA on Wednesday, March 6th from 12:30 PM-1:30 PM in the Memorial Union 240 Navajo Room. He will be discussing the topic: "Navigating Graduate School and Beyond." He will share his research regarding activism and Latinos, as well as his journey through graduate school and academia, and some of the challenges he faced (especially as a Latino male) as he navigated through that process. All graduate students are welcome to attend! Refreshments will be provided!
